WLA/WHS Scholarly Series–Sex, Scandal, and Upheaval: 1919 – What’s Changed? – Men in Black Sox

March 10, 2019 @ 4:00 pm - 5:30 pm
Free

In the 12th year of the collaboration between Wilton Library and the Wilton Historical Society, the scholarly lecture series theme is ‘Sex, Scandal and Upheaval: 1919 – What’s Changed?’ Veteran sports writer Steve Wulf is at the plate with the story of the infamous cheating scandal that enveloped the 1919 World Series.

One hundred years ago, the stage was set for the darkest drama in the history of baseball:  the Black Sox Scandal. Upset at the penny-pinching ways of White Sox owner Charles Comiskey, and tempted by the riches promised to them by gamblers, several members of the team conspired to help the Cincinnati Red Stockings win the 1919 World Series.

Wulf is a senior writer with ESPN, where he has happily worked since 1997, when he became one of the founding editors of ESPN The Magazine. See the library’s registration link for details. The lecture is sponsored by MaryGail and Jerry Gristina; Steve Hudspeth  is the moderator.

The final lecture is Sunday, March 31 at the Wilton Historical Society – “Votes for Women” – with Pam Dougherty of the Connecticut Women’s Hall of Fame.

Reception will follow the talk. There is no charge to attend but donations are always welcomed. Registration required–please register for each lecture individually. Register online or call 203.762.6334.
