Wine tasting benefiting Wilton Historical Society taps into a bit of history
When is a wine tasting not just a wine tasting? When Ancona’s Wines & Liquors offers a special afternoon tasting to benefit the Wilton Historical Society on Saturday, Feb. 24, from 2-5 p.m The sommelier du jour will be Michael Crystal, (also known as Dr. C in a nod to DRC, an estate in Burgundy, France that produces some of the world’s most renowned wines). Five wines with a hint of historical notes will be sampled for the occasion. A portion of each sale will go directly to the Wilton Historical Society.

“We think it’s pretty cool to be partnering with the Wilton Historical Society for this wine tasting,” Ancona’s owner Mitch Ancona said. “We’re hoping to do a number of these benefit wine tastings for more Wilton nonprofits every other month throughout the year. The customer can come in and experience some fun and exciting wines and then decide to purchase. And it benefits the community by supporting Wilton’s great assets like the historical society.”
Ancona’s Wine Director Codey Foster said he and Crystal had fun putting together the wine list for the event.
“In creating a theme for the afternoon, we chose wines that have a little bit of a historical significance, a slight story behind each wine that we think wine aficionados and history buffs might enjoy.”
The five wines for the sampling are Saint Hilaire Blanc De Blanc, Mueller-Catoir MC Scheurebe Trocken, Lomas De Llahuen Pipeno, Marques De Riscal Rioja Reserva, and Boucard Nom De Zeus!!! (exclamations are part of the brand name).
Wilton Historical Society Director Nick Foster (no relation to Codey) said he was grateful for Ancona’s generosity. “It is an unexpected gift that is most welcomed, and it demonstrates Mitch’s commitment to the community. My hope is that the community will respond in kind and join us at Ancona’s on Feb. 24.”
Ancona’s Wines & Liquors is located at 5 River Rd., in the Wilton River Park Shopping Center.
Norwalk River Rowing Program
Wilton High School Students Invited to Join New Wilton Crew Club
The Norwalk River Rowing program is hosting a new club for Wilton high school students to row crew. While it will be separate and unaffiliated with the Wilton School District and Wilton High School, the new Wilton Crew Club is receiving an exposure boost from the Wilton Athletic Department.
Athletic Director Bobby Rushton emailed WHS families about the new program and noted that a pre-season informational meeting and sign-up session will be held for both students and parents at Wilton High School to learn more about participating in the club.
The meeting will take place this Friday, Feb. 16, at 7:45 a.m. in WHS Room 215. There are both boys and girls teams forming. At the meeting, interested students will have the chance to speak with Coach Steve Quagliano, a former Olympic competitor and coach, who brings his experience and expertise to the program.
“This is a fantastic chance for our students to broaden their horizons and engage in a unique and enriching athletic experience,” Rushton wrote. More information about the program is available online.
