The Wilton Conservation Commission is sponsoring a moonlight hike this Sunday evening, Jan. 24 at Schenck’s Island, the 17-acre park located right in Wilton Center, across the street from Stop & Shop near River Rd.. Led by Wilton’s environmental analyst Mike Conklin, the hike will start and end at the parking lot. Following the walk, participants will be able to enjoy a campfire and s’mores and hot chocolate.
Conklin said the Conservation Commission has been holding monthly walks through out the past year in order to encourage more residents to utilize Wilton’s parks and open spaces. Holding this one at night, especially after the weekend’s expected snowfall, will certainly provide an unexpected and different view of a Wilton amenity.
“Most people would not think of taking a night hike in our open spaces in winter. Walking through the woods or a snow covered meadow while the moon is full can be an amazing experience; the moonlight reflects off the snow and illuminates the landscape around you.”
The event is open to all Wilton residents. Participants are encouraged to dress in warm clothes and bring snowshoes or footwear appropriate for walking on a snow covered trail.
What’s also neat is that the event is a great way to bring the community together and utilize something that’s becoming increasingly identified with Wilton—the outdoors and open spaces. Even more so, this is a space that is both so accessible and secluded all at the same time.
“The Conservation Commission chose Scheck’s Island because it is a unique ecosystem right in Wilton Center. It is also a great location if you wanted to grab dinner at a nearby restaurant before or after the walk.”
Sunday night’s Full Moon Walk at Schenck’s Island will begin at 5:30 p.m.. The event is open to all Wilton residents. Participants should wear sturdy footwear and warm clothing and bring a flashlight or headlamp. Snowshoes are encouraged. Children are welcome and dogs on leash may also attend.
Pre-Registration is required. Please call Jackie Algon 203.210.5240 and leave a message with the number of people attending and a phone number and email address in case the event is cancelled.
