On Saturday, Dec. 13, Hillside Cemetery will join thousands of cemeteries across the country in honoring our nation’s veterans through Wreaths Across America. Together with Wilton Boy Scout Troop 125, we will place evergreen wreaths on the graves of more than 485 veterans, men and women who served in every war from the Revolutionary War to present-day conflicts. We first gather at the Wilton Veteran’s Memorial at 10 AM for moving ceremony. Then proceed to Hillside Cemetery at 165 Ridgefield Road to lay the wreaths.
The story of Wreaths Across America began in 1992 when Morrill Worcester, a wreath maker from Maine, placed his extra wreaths at Arlington National Cemetery. What started as a small act of kindness has become a nationwide movement, with more than 2.7 million wreaths laid at over 3,700 locations. Its mission, Remember, Honor, Teach, guides every volunteer and participant across the country.
Each wreath is a symbol of remembrance: the evergreens represent eternal life, the circular shape eternity, and the red bow the blood and sacrifice of those who served. When each wreath is laid, the veteran’s name is spoken aloud ensuring they are never forgotten.
Please help us honor every veteran at Hillside Cemetery by sponsoring a wreath or joining us on this moving day of remembrance. Together, we can make sure that no hero is left without a wreath this December. Please go to www.wreathsacrossamerica.org/CT0150 to make your donation.
