Mardi “Bra” Drive to Run in Wilton for Second Year

After a very successful Mardi “Bra” campaign last year, Wilton businesses are again fully embracing a community clothing drive to collect new, and gently used, bras for women in need. Last year the community donated an amazing 270 bras.

The Undies Project Mardi “Bra” drive is held each year to coincide with Mardi Gras.

“We decided to still go ahead with our Mardi “Bra” drive despite the still uncertain and challenging times”, said Lucy Langley, co-president of The Undies Project. “We believe people are eager to continue to help, and the need is now greater than ever.”

For women who are homeless, living in shelters or on a low income, a bra sometimes can be unattainable, or a big expense. For many, underwear is a necessity, not a luxury.

“Imagine having to make the choice between putting food on the table or purchasing new underwear. Many of us just take it for granted, but for those less fortunate it is a real hardship,” co-president Laura Delaflor said.

Started in 2015 by Langley and Delaflor, the mission of The Undies Project is to provide new underwear to men, women and children in need to improve their lives. They identified that underwear is the most under-donated, and most needed, item of clothing for those who are struggling.

“No one should be deprived of the simple, basic necessity of new, clean underwear,” said Delaflor, adding, “Hygiene and physical comfort are only a part of this basic human need. New, clean underwear also provides dignity and self-esteem.”

The Undies Project is accepting donations of new and gently used, clean laundered bras. All sizes are needed but in particular sizes 34-38. All donations received will be distributed through The Undies Project’s 26 partner agencies that help those in need.
