All good things must come to an end, and so it happens that Wilton Library will be replacing its phone system this Friday, Jan. 29.
The new system will use direct dial numbers so that people can reach the service desks of their choice by dialing specific numbers.
The library’s main telephone number will remain the same, which is 203.762.3950. The direct dial numbers for the service desks are: Circulation Desk, 203.762.6334; Children’s Library, 203.762.6336; Teen Services, 203.762.6342 and Reference Desk, 203.762.6350. The new numbers will go into effect on Friday, Jan. 29. Additional department and employee numbers will be available on the library’s website, and through the auto-attendant on the phone system on Friday.
According to Mary Anne Franco, Wilton Library’s assistant director, technology and training, the change was a necessary one that the library had to take in order to maintain a working phone system.
“It is time for us to replace the existing phone system because it has reached the end of its lifecycle and it is no longer supported by the vendor, which means that parts are no longer available,” she says.
Elaine Tai-Lauria, executive director for the library, noted that a few weeks ago there was a glitch in the system, underscoring that the time had come for the new equipment—which, thankfully, was already on order—to be put in place.
“Our maintenance agreement [on the current system] comes to an end on Jan. 31, so we drained every last drop out of it. Because this is a large expense for the library, we had to plan and save for it over the past three years. We were relieved when we were able to resuscitate the old system and keep it going for as long as we did,” she remarks.
