The Riverbrook Regional YMCA was recently awarded Praesidium Accreditation by Praesidium, a company that specializes in preventing sexual abuse in organizations that serve youth and vulnerable adults. Acording to Praesidium, the award publicly demonstrates the YMCA’s commitment to safety and achieving the highest industry standards in abuse prevention.
Achieving this accreditation, the Wilton YMCA participated in a rigorous, 10-month process that included site visits, interviews and a thorough review of the organization’s policies and procedures, along with successfuly implementation of any necessary updates and developments.
As part of the accreditation, Early Childhood and School Age Development Director Kimberly Fejes was appointed “Praesidium Guardian,” to lead all efforts ensuring that youth and vulnerable adults are safeguarded from sexual abuse, now and for years to come.
“As an educator, camp and preschool director, and an individual who has dedicated over 20 years to working with children, I am honored to represent our organization as our Praesidium Guardian. This accreditation is a testament to our team’s unwavering commitment to safety, extensive training, and dedication to creating an environment where both youth and vulnerable adults are protected,” Fejes said.
Through the accreditation program, the YMCA’s year-round and seasonal staff have been equipped to be trusted adults, recognize warning signs and uphold the highest standards of care, according to Fejes.
“This achievement reflects our mission to foster safe spaces where every child and individual feels secure and supported,” she said.
The Riverbrook YMCA was one of the first YMCAs to become accredited.
“We are proud to be among the early pilot groups selected for this initiative. In the coming years, all YMCAs will be required to obtain accreditation,” Fejes said.
Currently, the Y is participating in Child Abuse Prevention Month with 5 Days of Action, which runs from April 21-25. This week-long campaign aims to raise awareness and motivate adults to take proactive steps to protect children from sexual abuse.
