The Riverbrook Regional YMCA and Wilton Library have announced a call for artists to design and paint crosswalks in a way that organizers have described as “vibrant, inclusive … in honor of Pride.” A panel of judges will select one design from all submissions.
A press release issued by Wilton Pride said that the “collaborative project aims to celebrate the LGBTQIA+ community and promote acceptance and understanding within the Wilton community.”
“Rainbow crosswalks are more than just a colorful street painting; they are a powerful symbol of acceptance, equality, and pride,” Wilton Pride founder Farah Masani said. “By illuminating our crosswalks with the colors of the rainbow, we can send a clear message that Wilton is a welcoming and affirming community.”
Wilton Library Executive Director Caroline Mandler said that it was an honor for the library to partner again with Wilton Pride and the YMCA on the initiative.
“Painting our crosswalks is one way that the library can demonstrate our commitment to creating a safe and welcoming environment year-round. We look forward to seeing this year’s design ideas from our community artists,” Mandler said.
Riverbrook Regional YMCA CEO Christine Freedman said the effort fits her organization’s mission.
“Our Wilton Family YMCA is made up of people of all ages, from all backgrounds, working side by side so everyone can reach their full potential with dignity. We are proud of our community engagement with Wilton Library and Wilton Pride, to inspire action in our communities through the call for artists to design and paint vibrant and inclusive crosswalks. We are looking forward to seeing the designs,” Freedman added.
The YMCA and Wilton Library are inviting individuals to submit designs that “reflect the spirit of unity, diversity, equality, and LGBTQIA+ pride.”
