Wilton High School seniors will still graduate as planned on Saturday, Jun. 13, but school will continue for students in grades 3-11 until Friday, Jun. 19 due to snow days, according to a proposal that the Board of Education will vote on tonight (Thursday, Mar. 19).
While the original end date for school was Jun. 15, School Superintendent Kevin Smith said the five snow days this year pushed that day back.
April break will, however, remain intact and will be Apr. 13-17, he added.
Smith said the school year will run even longer for students at Miller-Driscoll School, who would be in class until Monday, Jun. 22, if the board approves his proposed calendar changes.
Miller-Driscoll, for students in grades PreK-second, was closed for a day in February after a frozen pipe burst overnight, flooding a hallway and several classrooms during a week of frigid temperatures across the state. The flooding affected three classrooms and the reading interventionist’s classroom along a corridor on one side of the building that leads toward the gymnasium.
While the dates would actually be pushed back to Jun. 22 for grades 3-11 and Jun. 23 for Miller-Driscoll School with the five snow days, Smith is proposing that the board cancel the 181st student school day.
“We expect very low attendance after Friday, 6/19,” the proposal states.
At a recent board meeting, Board of Education Chair Ruth DeLuca acknowledged the toll the winter weather has taken on the district.
“I want to thank everyone for their continued flexibility and resiliency as we deal with this crazy weather and get over the hill to spring,” she said. “I know it’s throwing everybody off, board members included. So Just, ‘Thank you,’ to every parent, teacher, staff, keeping everything moving along.”
The Board of Education is scheduled to meet at 7 p.m. tonight in the Wilton High School Professional Library.
