Paced by double wins from senior co-captain Jake Mercer and junior Hirsh Iyer, as well as winning all three relays, the Wilton High School swim and dive team moved to 3-0 by defeating Ridgefield by a score of 104-77 Monday, Jan. 13 at the Wilton YMCA pool.
Wilton started the meet strong by finishing first (AJ Yee, Ethan Elias, Lucas Fontana and Mercer) and second (Ozzy Andrews, Sam Jacobson, Danny Babashak and Andrew Mims) in the 200 medley relay. In the second event, Iyer and Eric Ding finished first and second in the 200 freestyle. In a closely contested race, Ridgefield senior Will Trotman won the 200 individual medley with Fontana and Yee finishing second and third. Mercer then won the 50 freestyle with Jacobson and Andrews tying for third.
After the break, Ridgefield’s Trotman won his second race in the 100 butterfly with Yee placing third. Depth became a factor when Mercer, Mims and Ding swept first, second and third in the 100 freestyle. The 500 freestyle was won by junior Ethan Lam.
Wilton closed out the meet winning the last four events which included the 200 freestyle relay (Iyer, Fontana, Ding and Yee), Iyer in the 100 backstroke, Fontana in the 100 breaststroke and the 400 freestyle relay (Ding, Andrews, Iyer and Mercer).
The diving competition was held Thursday, Jan. 16, with Wilton’s Spencer Smith placing third.
The next meet for Wilton is away at New Canaan High School on Wednesday, Jan. 22.
