Wilton Youth Council‘s new “Community Champion” program, part of its town-wide Wilton Coalition for Youth‘s “Wilton is Where You Belong” (#WiltonIsWhereYouBelong) campaign, highlights one individual each month who makes a positive difference in the Wilton community and sets a model for others to get connected in the same way. Candidates are nominated by community members by submitting a brief online nominating form; nominations are reviewed and selected monthly by Coalition members. The Coalition has partnered with GOOD Morning Wilton to announce each month’s Community Champion.
Skip Ploss is known to Wilton students and families as a dedicated paraprofessional at Miller-Driscoll Elementary School. His nomination described him as a person who “creates relationships with those students that is more than a classroom teacher. Ask anyone who knows him, if they ever received a pen drawing from him and you will see a huge smile on their face. He loves sharing his stories and drawings with many of the kids who have walked the halls of Miller-Driscoll.”
In addition to his work at Miller-Driscoll, Ploss also volunteers countless hours with the theater programs in Wilton, both with younger actors as a director for Wilton Children’s Theater and as a show director for productions at the Wilton Playshop.
The Wilton Coalition for Youth is made up of a myriad of organizations, town departments and individuals who serve youth and families in Wilton. These organizations are working together to coordinate efforts aimed at preventing substance misuse and promoting the mental health and emotional well-being of youth and families. The effort is spearheaded by the Wilton Youth Council. To nominate someone as a Community Champion, complete the online nomination form.
