Amelia Hughes of Wilton (above, left) and her partner Madeleine Wilson of New Canaan (right) are the National Champions in the 12-and-under division in Platform Tennis.

The girls won the 2016 American Platform Tennis Association (APTA) Junior National Championship tournament on Saturday, Feb. 27. More than 150 players comprising 77 teams competed at Nationals held in Short Hills, NJ. The girls faced their toughest competition of the season at the tournament but ended up winning the final 6-4, 7-5 against a strong team from Philadelphia.

Earlier in the season, the girls won their third straight CT State title and handily won the Indian Hills Trail Club Junior Ranking Open without losing a set. With their win at nationals, the girls have guaranteed themselves the number one national ranking for the season. Hughes, a 6th grader at Middlebrook School, trains at the Lake Club. Wilson is a 7th grader at New Canaan’s Saxe Middle School and trains at Woodway Country Club.
