Later this evening, some very generous Wilton High School students will make a small sacrifice in order to make a bigger difference in the world. There are 54 students who will shave their heads as part of the eighth annual St. Baldrick’s fundraiser to help children with cancer.
So far, they’ve surpassed their original fundraising goal, and as of press time on Wednesday, the St. Baldrick’s “Brave the Shave” WHS students have raised more than $20,000.
Each year a committee of students actively organizes the event and recruits participants. Senior Ian Filaski, one of the committee members, says that it wasn’t hard to get people willing to make the sacrifice for the cause.
“I think kids are eager to take part in this fundraiser because it has become a school tradition. It’s a relatively easy way to raise money for a noble cause, and shaving our heads demonstrates solidarity and our support for children who are going through rough times.”
One of those student volunteers is sophomore Jasmine Whittaker, who stands out from the rest–she’ll be the first girl to ever take part and shave her head. She’s excited to be able to do something like this, and didn’t hesitate to sign up. Plus, she says it’s personal–Jasmine knows someone the same age who has fought the cancer battle.

“I signed up because I won’t need to comb my hair in the morning–only kidding! I wanted to do something to make a difference. I don’t think I’ll be able to shave my head when I’m older and working, so it was good timing this year. So many friends and family have been affected by cancer, including a family friend who is my age and who lost part of his leg to cancer. I wanted to do something to help.”
The group shave was originally set to happen Tuesday evening but due to the snow storm it has been rescheduled to tonight, Thursday, March 16, in the WHS cafeteria at 7 p.m.. Donations are still being accepted online. To donate to Jasmine, visit her online fundraising page. Or visit the Wilton High School page and donate in honor of the entire group effort.
UPDATE, 1:00 p.m.–Tim Kenny, one of the founders of the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, recently moved to Wilton and will be attending the event tonight.
