In a remarkable execution of a school-year-long plan, Middlebrook student Patrick Cummins and his 7th grade classmates helped changed the world on Thursday, May 14. As part of his 7-Green team’s curriculum, “The Power of One,” which teaches that one person can change the world, Patrick organized a plan to package 20,000 meals for the humanitarian organization, “Stop Hunger Now.”
After school on Thursday, about 50 students gathered in the school’s cafeteria and donned hair nets as they got prepped and received instructions on what they had to do. In an organized assembly line effort, with the kids’ favorite music blaring in the background, 7-Green team students and teachers worked side by side got all 20,000 meal packages assembled. They filled bags with rice and nutrients, weighed them, sealed them and boxed them up. On occasion a gong would ring out to mark each time the group had reached 1,000 meals packaged.
Below, we’re privileged to post the photos and video that Patrick’s mom, Tara Cummins, shared with us.
Patrick accomplished what he set out to do–to change the world. Not only has he led a team of people to feed hungry people, but he has also inspired teens like him to understand that helping others can be contagiously fun, rewarding and worthwhile. He has sparked an idea that, with any luck, Middlebrook will continue to implement every year hereafter, so that the classes that follow this year’s 7-Green will do the same thing, spreading that do-gooding like radiating waves, helping more and more and more people.
Bravo Patrick, bravo 7th graders, bravo teachers…bravo!
