Because Wilton is the first town in the state breaking ground and partnering with Yankee Gas on CT’s First Large-Scale Natural Gas Expansion Project, Gov. Dannel Malloy will be coming to Wilton to help kick off the project with a ribbon cutting today.

“It’s a program he was very active in, a comprehensive energy strategy, he’s supported it. We said, ‘absolutely, the governor is always welcome,’” first selectman Bill Brennan said at last Monday evening’s Board of Selectmen meeting.

Malloy will be joined by Northeast Utilities Chairman, President & CEO Tom May, Brennan as well as other town officials, CT Department of Energy and Environmental Protection Commissioner Rob Klee at a ceremony for the start of the natural gas pipeline expansion project. The ribbon cutting will be held at Town Hall at 11 a.m.

He will also be making other stops in Wilton, the first at Village Market, around 11:30 a.m.

Wilton is the first community in the state to partner with Yankee Gas through Connecticut’s Comprehensive Energy Strategy, which was approved by state regulators last year.

Construction to connect Wilton’s downtown business district, municipal buildings and schools to the new natural gas line is scheduled to be completed by the end of November.  According to the utility, Wilton’s Energy Commission estimates that with the availability of natural gas, the town will save approximately $500,000 annually in energy costs.
