This weekend, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will be hosting a public Open House of its newly completed church building.
Open House tours will be held Friday, Nov. 7, from 4-6 p.m, Saturday, Nov. 8 from 11 a.m.-3 p.m., and Sunday, Nov 9., from 1-3 p.m. The new chapel (241 Danbury Rd.) is located directly across from Wilton Town Hall.
Representatives of the LDS congregation, more commonly known as Mormon, are looking forward to sharing their new home with the Wilton community.
“If you are curious about the building, or the members who worship there, we would love to have you attend,” LDS Wilton Open House Committee Chair Michele Tupper said. “We are excited to have a building here in Wilton, and look forward to serving and worshipping with you in this wonderful community.”
The Church purchased the 1.8-acre property at 241 Danbury Rd. in January 2019, and established a ward in Wilton on June 20, 2021 and broke ground on their planned new home in December 2023.
The Wilton congregation will draw members from Wilton, Weston, Ridgefield and Redding.
The establishment of the ward in Wilton was part of a larger reorganization of the Church’s regional boundaries.
Shortly after the Ward was established, Todd Herget, president of the Church’s Fairfield, CT “stake” (a term the Church uses for a region of its congregations) spoke with GOOD Morning Wilton.
“A meetinghouse really becomes a central point of worship for our members,” Herget explained, but just as importantly, it also serves as a “gathering place” for youth groups, Bible study, social events and various other activities.
“[The meeting house] will be a great blessing for the congregation in Wilton,” said Herget. “But it will also be, in our opinion, a great addition to this wonderful community of Wilton.”
According to Herget, Wilton was desirable to the Church for many reasons.
“We did look at many locations throughout the county,” he said. “Wilton is a standout community. Its schools are excellent. The community is robust. There is [proximity] to New York, a train line that connects to the city.”
The location 241 Danbury Rd. that sealed the deal.
“It’s just an ideal location. It met all of the needs and requirements,” Herget said.
