Wilton CT, 10:45 A.M. — An earthquake with a magnitude of 4.8 centered in central New Jersey shook much of the upper East Coast this morning at approximately 10:25 a.m.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the earthquake was centered in Tewksbury, NJ. Anecdotal reports say it was felt as far as Philadelphia and Rhode Island.

Wilton Fire Chief/Emergency Management Director Jim Blanchfield confirmed what many in Wilton felt.

“As a town we’re assessing any impact with all the Town departments, and we will update everyone accordingly. But we have no reports of any damage in Wilton,” Blanchfield said.

Blanchfield said additional updates will be made later in the day, but if anyone has questions they can call the Wilton Fire Department.

UPDATE 11 A.M. Witon Public Schools Superintendent Kevin Smith emailed the school community about the earthquake, reporting that tremors were felt in the school buildings for “several seconds.”

“No injuries or damage have been reported, and students and staff are safe,” Smith wrote.
