Know a teenager who might have a hit songwriting talent inside? Wilton’s Parks and Recreation Department is running a new songwriting workshop this fall. Wilton resident Andy (“A.J.”) Gundell brings his award-winning songwriting talent and extensive teaching experience to a “Songwriting Camp for Teens” program beginning this Saturday, Sept. 17, at 10 a.m.-noon, at Comstock Community Center.

This six-session course is in contemporary songwriting for teens ages 15-18, and taught by the 13-time Emmy award winning musician and songwriter.

Each week, step by step, Andy instructs aspiring young writers in how to create a pop song:  from a hit idea, hook, and melody, through the standard chorus, verse, and bridge structures. In a guided group environment that’s nurturing and fun, the goal is for each student to complete one song. Instrumental basics on keyboard or guitar are preferred—and both instruments are provided. In the last class, each student will have the opportunity to perform their song at a showcase for their families and friends at Trackside Teen Center.

“Teens are the best to teach,” says Gundell. “They’re so plugged into what’s happening musically today. Many have an innate talent that hasn’t been discovered or needs to be encouraged and directed. And their energy is great–they’re not afraid to dream loud and go for it.”

Gundell’s Emmy awards, all for music and sound, include an unsurpassed three for Outstanding Original Song. He’s worked for and/or had his music performed on every major network, many prominent cable and streaming channels, national advertising campaigns, and by other recording artists.
