Wilton Childrens Theaters production of Tony Award-winning Matilda the Musical is all about kids becoming superheroes. Based on the book by beloved childrens author Roald Dahl, the smash hit is a wildly funny, sometimes heartbreaking, and always inspiring tale about the anarchy of childhood, the power of imagination, and a girl who wont let being little” stop her from putting an unjust world right.

All good superhero stories need a despicable villain, and Matilda offers a few. Most of the adult characters in Matilda are either terrible, cruel, or paralyzed by low self-esteem. Matilda Wormwood (Daisy Beach) faces many injustices in her life, like her dad insisting on calling her a boy and both parents (Illeas Paschalidis and Sydney Farago) thinking she is “stupid” for reading books. The young students of Crunchem Hall must deal with the child-hating, bullying headmistress Miss Trunchbull (Thomas Fletcher), and in true Roald Dahl fashion the circumstances go from bad to worse. Matilda finds an ally in her teacher, Miss Honey (Charlotte Markey), and, though she is little, she stands up and fights for what’s right! The situation becomes so dire that Matilda has no choice but to start a revolution. Matilda becomes a superhero, and she inspires her classmates to stand up for themselves as they sing, Never again will she take away my freedom, and we wont forget the day we fought for the right to be a little bit naughty.” Matilda is an empowering musical with great music.

WCTs Matilda the Musical features a cast of 56 Wilton children and is produced by Jennifer Acerra-Markey and Renee Rafferty. The professional team includes Ginny Ruggieri (director), Benjamin Doyle (musical director), Judy Abbatiello (choreographer), Jim Durkin of In Phase Audio (sound), Craig Gehr of LX Lighting LLC (lighting), and Brooke Burling (set design/production).
