Wilton Emergency Management Director/Fire Chief Jim Blanchfield confirmed that FEMA has notified town officials that it will permanently close the Wilton Disaster Recovery Center (DRC) for in-person appointments. It will be closed as of Monday, Oct. 14, at 6 p.m.

FEMA had opened the center in partnership with the state of Connecticut as a temporary facility to help anyone who was impacted and experienced damage after the Aug. 18-19 severe storm, flooding, landslides, and mudslides apply for FEMA assistance.

Wilton was selected as the one location for a Fairfield County DRC, something Blanchfield had been pleased about given the “substantial number of submissions” and reports of impact from the flooding in Wilton.

According to State Sen. Ceci Maher, the Wilton DRC was closed “due to lower than expected demand from the public.” She sent notice to constituents that FEMA will consolidate its in-person Disaster Recovery Services at its Southbury, CT location.

Residents can still apply for FEMA assistance without visiting a center either by going online to FEMA’s Disaster Assistance website or calling the FEMA help line at 800.621.3362 (800.621.FEMA).

The deadline for filing physical damage claims is Nov. 19, 2024.
