The Wilton Fire Department is reminding residents that October is Fire Prevention Month and it’s a good time for all citizens to re-affirm their commitment to fire safety.
The department welcomes visitors to Fire Headquarters (at 236 Danbury Rd., on the Town Hall campus), not just during October but any time during daylight hours, to visit with the firefighters, gain fire safety knowledge, have some fun with the family and even take some photos.
“In between emergency calls, training, housekeeping, maintenance, visiting the Wilton Schools (this month), and similar activities, we’ll be glad to host you and show you around,” writes Fire Chief Ronald Kanterman, in a media announcement.
Just last Friday, Oct. 3, Wilton’s bravest welcomed Daisy Troop 50793 Wilton Fire Headquarters. The girls who visited with the firefighters included (pictured above) Mia DeCore, Alexandra Furman, Sydney Leinberger, Keira Rafferty, Jordyn Ennis, Sailor Scully, Caris Keller, Grace Johnson, Caroline Worst, Meira Flavin, , Ellery Worst, Clara Fleckenstein and Kerry Dodman. “The girls learned about respecting authority and what to do in case of fire, plus they got tour of the firehouse. Best of all they were the first visiting group to go inside the brand new Engine Tanker No. 4 that came in last week,” said Troop co-leader Kathryn Johnson. “Lots of fun was had by all.”
Among some of the other tips Chief Kanterman suggests everyone remember during the month, he urges everyone to:
- Inspect your home for fire hazards.
- Store flammable liquids (gas for the mower) and gases (propane for the BBQ) outside and way from your house.
- Make sure you have and practice an escape plan.
- If you have a fire extinguisher in your home, learn how to use it.
- When you change your clock, change your smoke alarm batteries at the same time.
- Call your contractor and have your fire and house alarms maintained.
- Make sure Halloween costumes are flameproof and that your tick-or-treater is visible in the dark. Carry flashlights. Use reflective trim on costumes.
- Make every month, Fire Prevention month!
