The Wilton Library will be offering two free college essay workshops, one on Thursday evening, Sept. 22 from 7-8 p.m. and the second on Sunday, Sept. 25 from 3-4 p.m.. The workshops will be led by Carey Field, college essay consultant, freelance writer and marketing consultant, who is the former editor of Wilton Magazine and a former SVP with several major New York City advertising agencies.

Field has worked with many area students over the years, helping them craft effective essays for hundreds of colleges ranging from University of Pennsylvania, Middlebury College, Dartmouth, University of Richmond, Colorado College, Brown, NYU, and Cornell to UConn.

In the workshop, Field will review the Common Application essay prompts and provide guidance on how to approach each prompt, and how to brainstorm for a topic that will allow students to present themselves in a positive and compelling way and their own voice. She will also review pitfalls to avoid and share examples of effective essays written by former high school seniors.

“The personal essays, including the common application and supplemental essays, are often students’ only chance to speak directly to the admissions staff and share something meaningful about themselves in their own words,” Field explains.

The college essay workshop is free, but space is limited so reservations are recommended.  Although the workshop is intended for rising high school seniors, parents are also welcome to attend. For more information or to reserve a space, please call Susan Lauricella at the Wilton Library at 203.762.3950, ext. 6343 or visit the library website.
