GOOD To Talk: Wilton Holds Mental Health Community Conversation

Join the Wilton community at the Riverbrook Regional YMCA on Thursday, Oct. 22, at 9:15 a.m. for a discussion on mental health and substance abuse.
With youth and adults in the community and across the country facing various mental health challenges, this event aims to foster connection and conversation, reassuring attendees that they are not alone.
Navigating these topics and the healthcare system can be difficult and isolating. Different groups are coming together to engage in meaningful dialogue and explore available community resources. The event will cover various aspects of mental health, offer guidance on recognizing signs of concern in both youth and adults, and discuss challenges and resources for navigating the ever-changing mental health system.
Moderated by Yale Child Study Center and Yale Center for Brain and Mind Health psychologist and youth mental health researcher Christine Cha, PhD, the panel includes Wilton Deputy Police Chief Robert Cipolla, Parent Coach/NAMI facilitator/Block Party USA Founder Vanessa Elias, Yale Child Study Center Assistant Professor Dr. Jackie Britt-Friedman, Wilton Social Services Director Stephanie Rowe and Wilton Public Schools Director of Climate, Community, Wellness and Belonging Kim Zemo.
Along with the panel discussion, there will be resource tables with different mental health organizations available for attendees to engage with.
The Community Conversation on Mental Health is sponsored by NAMI Southwest CT, Riverbrook Regional YMCA, Town of Wilton, Wilton Police Department, Wilton Public Schools, Wilton Youth Council and the Yale Child Study Center.

GOOD To Get Healthy: Classes for YMCA’s New Diabetes Prevention Programs Now Forming

The Wilton YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program is tailored for adults aged 18 and older who have a BMI (Body Mass Index) greater than 25 and may be at risk for developing type 2 diabetes.
The program offers a welcoming environment to support participants in their journeys towards a healthier lifestyle. More than just a series of classes, the program offers an opportunity to engage with others who share similar goals, learn healthy habits and celebrate personal growth together.
Eligibility can be confirmed through one of three blood tests: A1c, Fasting Plasma Glucose or 2-hour Plasma Glucose. Additionally, individuals who have had gestational diabetes during a previous pregnancy or possess two or more risk factors are also welcome to join.
Participants are supported by a dedicated Diabetes Prevention Program facilitator, Geoff Malyszka at the Wilton YMCA, and will learn practical strategies for healthy eating, increasing physical activity and making lifestyle changes that can reduce the risk of developing diabetes.
Contact Director of Healthy Living Rhoda Kasparek for more information on dates and registration, via email or by calling 203.762.8384, ext. 282.
