Among the range of organizations and individuals impacted by the federal government shutdown is Weir Farm National Historical Park (NHP). Liz Castagna, president of Weir Farm’s not-for-profit partner Friends of Weir Farm, shared an update on the ramifications of the shutdown on current park operations.

“At this time, most of Weir Farm NHP’s staff have been furloughed without pay. While the park grounds remain open with limited staffing, the visitor center, Weir House, art studios and bathrooms are currently closed,” Castagna confirmed in a letter she sent to GMW.

Other programs and services are currently unavailable, she said, including educational programs, ranger-led tours, preservation efforts and trail maintenance are all temporarily on hold.

In her letter, Castagna listed suggestions for how the community can support Weir Farm NHP:

  • Spread the Word: Share any appreciation of Weir Farm NHP and other national parks with family, friends and neighbors.
  • Stay Informed: Stay connected with Friends of Weir Farm for updates. Follow the Friends on Facebook and Instagram, and sign up for monthly emails. Community members can also support future programs, projects and park needs by donating through the website
  • Engage: Anyone who would like to express their appreciation for Weir Farm NHP and the National Park Service can contact their state’s congressional representatives, and as Castagna wrote, “encourage their consideration for Weir Farm NHP and the National Park Service in their discussions to resolve the federal government shutdown.” Wilton’s U.S. representative is Congressman Jim Himes, who can be contacted online or at 202.225.5541.
