Woodcock Nature Center is grateful to the Kiwanis Club of Wilton for a recent “Signature Community Building Project” grant of $9,500 to support the nature center’s much-needed technology infrastructure modernization. The donation will help fund the installation of a new secure network system, cloud-based phone system and Wi-Fi upgrades, which will modernize the center’s technical operations as well as enhance visitor and program participant experiences.
With the support from Kiwanis, Woodcock has already begun replacing its outdated network hardware to address several critical needs, including improved performance, enhanced cybersecurity and greater reliability across the center’s facilities. The new network will include securely segmented Wi-Fi networks, ensuring safe, seamless access for Woodcock staff, teachers and guests. The upgrade will also include vital cybersecurity measures, such as firewalls, antivirus protection, content filtering, and malware defense, ensuring that the nature center is protected from evolving digital threats.
Addressing Key Needs at Woodcock Nature Center
The new network infrastructure is an essential step for Woodcock Nature Center as it continues to grow and expand its programs. The organization has seen rapid growth in recent years, with its budget increasing by $200,000 since 2022 alone. The donation will enable Woodcock to enhance its technological capabilities, allowing for efficient operations, improved program delivery, and enhanced fundraising efforts.
Notably, these upgrades will support reliable internet access for educational programming including everything from scientific research and virtual teaching tools to encouraging on-site citizen science projects by offering easy access to connected devices and online data collection. The new network will include vital cybersecurity protections and improve efficiency for staff, allowing for digital check-in/check-out during programs as well as improving fundraising efforts by enabling text-to-give donations and virtual auction features at events, which has previously been a challenge.
A Strong Community Partnership
Woodcock Nature Center officials said they are thrilled to collaborate with the Kiwanis Club of Wilton on this project, which marks a critical milestone for the center as it continues its mission to provide hands-on nature education and environmental stewardship to the community.
“We are incredibly grateful to the Kiwanis Club for their generous support,” said Woodcock Nature Center Executive Director Lenore Herbst. “This upgrade will not only improve our day-to-day operations, but also open up new opportunities for educational programs, fundraising, and community engagement. The technology improvements will allow us to better serve our visitors and provide more effective, safer, and more engaging experiences for everyone.”
