Melissa McFadden was a high school senior, nearly 30 years ago, when she passed away. A witty, engaging varsity cheerleader and great dancer, she worked as a receptionist at the Wilton YMCA. She had hopes of going to vocational school and becoming a chef.

Melissa had a joy for life, brightening the lives of those around her. She also had Down’s Syndrome.

After her passing, a scholarship was created in her name as a legacy celebrating her life and achievements. The Melissa McFadden Scholarship is given each year to a Wilton High School graduating senior who demonstrates an interest and desire to improve the lives of individuals with intellectual and physical challenges.

For the past few years, it has been an honor for Trackside to partner with the YMCA, helping to spread joy to Wilton families at the annual pancake Breakfast with Santa.

The magic of the morning isn’t just about Buddy and Santa, the sugary breakfast and crafts. It’s one of the ways Melissa’s legacy and joy lives on. It’s also the primary way funds are raised for this important scholarship in her name.

I attended a funeral recently for my neighbor’s father. Growing up, our families were so close. Listening to the middle son, a grown man now himself, share stories about his dad in his proudly moving eulogy, really hit home for me.

All we have when we pass away are the stories that someone else chooses to tell, about who we were, and the impact we had on those around us.

Through the flipping of pancakes, the making of reindeer food, the pictures with Buddy and Santa, and the storytelling of Mrs Claus, Melissa’s story and spirit live on.

Breakfast with Santa has run for over two decades and has become a Wilton family tradition. It’s a festive and fun morning with a dash of magic, a sprinkle of giving, and a whole lot of meaning.

This isn’t just an event for families with young children, it’s a morning of joy for all. We hope to see you this Saturday, Dec. 14, at one of the three sessions (9:15-10 a.m., 10:15-11 a.m. and 11:15 a.m.-12 p.m.).

You can register online.

If you’re unable to attend but would like to contribute to the Melissa McFadden Scholarship, you can reach out to the YMCA.
