This is an installment from contributing writer Tara Thompson, president of the Wilton Newcomers Club, providing news and information about WNC events and activities, as well as a look at life in Wilton life from the point of view of a newcomer.
Well, it’s been quite a busy week for the Newcomers! I’m happy to announce that the Newcomers Club and the Wilton Woman’s Club will be working together to organize a Volunteer Fair to be held this November, in the Brubeck Room of the Wilton Library. We all want to help the many organizations in Wilton, and sometimes the only question is, How? This November, let’s find out, together. As this event takes shape, I will have many more details. But in the meantime, if there is a worthy cause here in our town in need of volunteers, the Newcomers want to know about it! Please email info@wiltonnewcomersclub.com.
I also met with Robin Axness of the Wilton Library to discuss how Newcomers can support our fabulous library. When I was researching towns in Fairfield County before we moved here, one of the things I found most impressive about Wilton was our town library. A weekly Minecraft Club, a Rainbow Loom Class, and now an Innovation Station–how fantastic! Beyond taking advantage of the library programming for the kids, this summer the hubs and I will definitely get a sitter to enjoy one of the wonderful acts in their Concert Series and then stroll through town to a favorite local restaurant. And I can’t wait to raise a glass at the Ladies Soiree this fall. Yes, the Wilton Library definitely rocks!
Last week’s Ladies Night Out was such a success (thank you Mint Nail Spa & Portofino Restaurant!), we’re already planning another one! Today Amy Cooper and I met with Nicole Thornbrough from Hello Yoga. In October, we will “strike a pose” and then chat over wine, cheese and chocolate. I might need a glass before attempting anything beyond Downward Dog, but Nicole has promised she will be kind to beginners and expert yogis alike. (And although the wine and treats are enough of a reward, she’s also planning on offering a special opportunity to all who attend!)
Wednesday, after a brief pit stop at Rolling Hills Country Club to see the winners of the 90th Connecticut Golf Open awarded their trophies, the kids and I were off to take a tour of the Wilton Fire Station organized by our very own Christie O’Sullivan and Nicole Decore. Our brave firefighters couldn’t have been nicer and more generous with their time. The kids climbed all over their trucks, tried on equipment and asked dozens of questions. While they were occupied, I learned that some of the men supply their own dive equipment because much of the Wilton equipment is inadequate. For men who risk everything on a daily basis, what can we do to support them? I know I’m certainly open to ideas!
As I get the kids ready for bed after our long day (I definitely won’t be far behind them) I’m looking forward to our Monthly Morning Coffee today, Thursday July 31. For me, it’s always a reminder of how much I love this town. I don’t know that I’ve ever left without a smile on my face and several scrawled notes about future playdates or arrangements to meet up for lunch or a mani/pedi with a new girlfriend.
