Wilton-based Fidelco Guide Dog Foundation was awarded a $100,000 grant from Newman’s Own Foundation as part of the foundation’s $1.5 million total grant-giving effort supporting veteran organizations. The 2016 Veteran Guide Dog Program enables Fidelco to breed, train and place guide dogs with military, veteran and first responder personnel and family members, and provide lifetime follow-up services. Plus marketing funds will support extended outreach initiatives.

Newman’s Own Foundation awarded grants to more than 20 organizations in total that support veteran entrepreneurship, providing veterans with the necessary training, support, and access to capital; and organizations connecting veterans to quality higher education and creating supportive networks on campus. Paul Newman, the late actor and philanthropist, established Newman’s Own Foundation in 2005 to carry on his philanthropic legacy after he started Newman’s Own, the food company, in 1982 with all profits going to charity. Newman was a World War II veteran, and the Foundation continues its longstanding support of military service organizations in his honor.

The organizations receiving the grants provide assistance to veterans, helping them use the skills developed in service to their country to succeed in school, start their own businesses, or pursue other life goals. The organizations are located across the country.

Since 1997, Newman’s Own Foundation has granted $1,000,000 to Fidelco. Last year, when the foundation gifted the same amount to the company, Eliot Russman, president and CEO of Fidelco, said, “There is no greater sacrifice than serving in the military and defending our country. Newman’s Own Foundation’s passionate support of our mission enables Fidelco to expand its efforts to serve our nation’s blinded heroes with the highest quality German Shepherd Guide Dogs available anywhere in the world.”

“The men and women of our military have earned and deserve the respect and support of a grateful nation,” said Robert Forrester, president and CEO of Newman’s Own Foundation, a veteran with service in Vietnam. “We are proud to continue the long tradition begun by Paul Newman, who served as a radioman/gunner aboard an Avenger Torpedo Bomber in the Pacific theater in WWII, of supporting veterans, active duty personnel, and their families.”

Military nonprofit organizations have been supported for over 20 years, with a total of $13.5 million donated since 2010. In addition to the Foundation grants, Newman’s Own, Inc., has supported military service charities through the Newman’s Own Awards for 17 years, in partnership with Fisher House Foundation and Military Times.

Newman’s Own Foundation was established by Paul Newman to continue his philanthropic legacy to use the profits and royalties from the sale of Newman’s Own products to make our world a better place by supporting charitable causes. Since 1982, Paul Newman and Newman’s Own Foundation have donated more than $475 million to thousands of charitable organizations around the world.
