Timothy Taylor Merwin IV, known to many as Delco, passed away peacefully at Norwalk Hospital on Sunday, Oct. 11 at the age of 77, surrounded by his family and his best friend, Dave Smith.

Tim, a lifelong Wilton resident, was the son of the late Gertrude and Timothy Merwin Jr. He grew up on his family’s dairy farm, participated in Wilton’s 4-H club, and graduated from Wilton High School in 1968. He was a member of the Wilton Volunteer Fire Department in the late 60s and early 70s.

After graduating high school, Tim worked for Jayne Brothers Sand and Gravel as a truck driver for several years. He then went on to work for Bolt Technology for 32 years, doing numerous jobs from driving trucks across the United States and into Canada, to working on machines in the shop until his retirement in 2016.

His love of trucks and the open road was a defining part of his life. Tim was a member of the Antique Truck Club of America for many years and went to as many truck shows as he could. Tim was a natural storyteller, with a remarkable memory for the details of his life and travels. He could tell you what roads and turns to take, even in states hundreds of miles away, or recall a meal he ate at a diner in 1977 like it was yesterday. He had a way of bringing his stories to life, sharing people, places and moments that stayed with him over the years.

He also had a gift for making friends wherever he went, whether chatting with waitstaff at a restaurant or getting to know the nurses who took care of him. His ability to connect with just about anyone made him someone people remembered.

Tim is survived by his beloved wife of almost 50 years, Virginia Vasale Merwin; his two daughters, Chelsea Merwin and her partner Kenny, and Victoria Merwin, both of Wilton; as well as his cousins, Gus and Tommy Merwin; his brother-in-law, Thomas Vasale; and many loved nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by his sisters Jane Merwin, Alice Fales, and Martha Burr; his aunt and uncle Eleanor and Augustus Merwin; his cousin John Merwin; and his niece Christine Burr.

In lieu of flowers, let’s be honest, Tim would say to invest in a well performing stock. However, if your financial portfolio is set, please consider a donation to the Wilton Volunteer Ambulance Corps or the Wilton Fire Department.

His family would like to sincerely thank the staff at Norwalk and Greenwich Hospitals, and especially Wilton Meadows and Sunrise Assisted Living of Wilton for all their compassionate care and dedication these past few years.

The family will receive friends and family Tuesday, Oct. 20 from 4–7 p.m. at Bouton Funeral Home (31 W Church St.). A graveside service will be held on Wednesday Oct. 21 at 11 a.m. at Hillside Cemetery (165 Ridgefield Rd.)
