UPDATE, 4:30 p.m., Thursday, March 8–Wilton Police have advised that Route 7/Danbury Rd. will be closed in the area of Four Seasons Racquet Club as Eversource completes repairs in the area. A detour will be in place.
ORIGINAL ARTICLE–Superintendent Kevin Smith made the early call, deciding at 2 p.m. on Thursday that all Wilton Public Schools and offices would be closed on Friday, May 9.
That seems like a logical decision, given how much havoc the storm wreaked on Wilton. At the storm’s peak on Wednesday night, there were over 160 street closures or blockages due to fallen trees and downed wires to keep crews from the Dept. of Public Works and Eversource busy, along with Wilton Police, Wilton CERT and Wilton Fire. As of Thursday afternoon, there are currently 60 blocked or partially blocked roads, and crews are now hard at work to clean up. [See photos below. If you have photos to share, please email them to editor@goodmorningwilton.com.
First selectwoman Lynne Vanderslice robo-called Wilton residents Thursday afternoon, to keep the town updated on progress for power restoration and road clearing. She said that road blockages were significant, and that Eversource experienced significant equipment damage which impacts their ability to restore power. The utility company has placed an onsite representative in Wilton’s Emergency Operations Center. The complete text of her call is below:
Good Afternoon, this is First Selectwoman Lynne Vanderslice. As you know yesterday’s storm created significant damage throughout the town. There are currently 60 blocked or partially blocked roads. This is down from the 160 blocked roads reported as of last night.
DPW worked throughout the evening and early morning and are back out today plowing and removing trees. Our priority is to open up the roads, particularly those that are landlocked.
Eversource crews are working in Town to remove downed wires to make safe and then restore power. In addition, an Eversource employee is onsite in our Emergency Operations Center.More than one third of the Town is without power. Although make safe is the priority, power restoration has already occurred for a small number. We continue to reach out to increase the number of Eversource crews servicing Wilton, though Eversource has experienced significant damage to their own equipment making resources scarce.
Emergency service and DPW employees, assisted by CERT, are doing all they can to resolve problems as fast as possible.
To learn about road openings, please sign up for emergency alerts by using the link on the Town’s homepage or check the Wilton Police Facebook page. Also if you haven’t already done so, please sign up for Eversource alerts.
If you need a warm space, both the Wilton Y and the Library are open. Town Offices are closed to allow resources to be focused on clean up, but we will be open tomorrow. If you need to reach me, I can be reached at Lynne.Vanderslice@Wiltonct.org.
Thank you for your patience.
