High heels and hilarity were on the agenda at Wilton Library last Thursday evening, July 2, when best-selling author Candace Bushnell made an appearance to promote her new book, Killing Monica.
Bushnell, the author most-known for creating Sex and the City, read a few pages from her new book and then answered questions from the large crowd of many, many women and three men.
Her newest novel is a great summer read about New York City-based author Pandy Wallis, whose books about a fun, fashion-loving character named Monica launched a series of box office-breaking movies. Pandy wants to move on and write about something different, much to the chagrin of her publisher and millions of fans. The story—a comedic, spoofy take on the socially-connected, celebrity worshiping New York City high society and media worlds—follows Pandy’s efforts to move on with her life and kill off the much-beloved fictional Monica.
Audience members were curious if Bushnell wrote the book from her own life experience of having created a character—Carrie Bradshaw—and book which spawned the hugely successful “Sex and the City” HBO television series and movies.
“Some people think that the book is about killing Carrie Bradshaw–which it is not,” she said.
For about 45 minutes, she answered crowd questions about her writing process, her life before and after Sex and the City, and what it’s like being a woman in the world of media and publishing.
Among her other fun product line extensions include a custom-made Killing Monica handbag and a set of emojis–as well as a Monica wine. “If you feel like drinking some good rosé while you’re reading Killing Monica, check out the Killing Monica wine!”
Of course, Sex and the City was still top of mind for many, In a fun homage to the shoe-loving character of Carrie Bradshaw, Wilton Library posted several pictures of fabulous shoes worn by several of the audience members on their Facebook page.
