Good morning. I attended last night’s meeting. It was great to see so many interested members of our community turn out to discuss the things that are happening in our town. As a member of Planning and Zoning, one of the takeaways is that many members of our community would like to see a period of time at our meetings set aside for public comment, both general comments as well as regarding specific projects, even if the agenda item is not up for a vote or the information package is not complete. On this matter, I would encourage you to write Planning and Zoning and see if we can set aside time at the beginning and/or the end of each meeting to hear public comment. I know the meetings run very long, and when specific agenda items are delayed it can be frustrating to sit through a four hour meeting to find out that public comment has been deferred. I would welcome additional direct public input. Perhaps a change of agenda can help alleviate this concern. With regard to one set of comments made during the meeting it was lobbed out that perhaps the members of Planning and Zoning are biased toward certain outcomes because of self interest. In several years on P&Z I have seen no such bias, and any time any member of P&Z has a conflict I have seen them recuse themselves. Finally, P&Z cannot vote against a project if it meets our regulations just because people don’t like it. Some of the discussion centered around issues that would require changes in our Zoning rules. If that is the intent, then there is a process for that kind of change, but until such regulations are changed I, for one, will have to vote with our current regulations. I do think that Wilton needs some changes to move forward. As part of the process that resulted in the new Zoning regulations, they were deliberated long and hard by both P&Z and the subcommittee. It’s tough work and there was time for public input, but if people feel they need a better forum please attend our meetings and make your voices heard. Best regards, Ken Hoffman
