What better opportunity to save a bit on back-to-school shopping for clothes and shoes than CT’s Tax Free Week, which runs from Sunday, Aug. 17 through Saturday, Aug. 23!

When shoppers make any purchases of most clothing and footwear priced less than $300 per item during that week-long period, they’re able to avoid paying Connecticut’s 6.35-percent sales tax. It’s the 15th year that the state has offered the incentive to shoppers.

There are some exceptions to the list of items that qualify for tax exemption. According to the CT Department of Revenue Services’ website, products that are not included as tax-free include, “any special clothing or footwear primarily designed for athletic activity or protective use that is not normally worn except when used for the athletic activity or protective use for which it was designed.”

It also lists “jewelry, handbags, luggage, umbrellas, wallets, watches, and similar items carried on or about the human body but not worn on the body in the manner characteristic of clothing.”
