Library Film Series Shows Documentary on Lyme Disease Epidemic, Saturday, June 13

The Wilton Library’s New Perspectives Film Series will be showing Under Our Skin on Saturday, June 13, at 7:30–9:30 p.m..

A chilling tale of microbes, medicine and money, Under Our Skin, an Oscar-shortlisted film has changed the landscape of the Lyme epidemic, bringing unprecedented awareness in an engaging and accessible way. The definitive record of the Lyme controversy, Under Our Skin exposes a hidden story of medical and scientific malfeasance and neglect. Following the stories of patients and physicians fighting for their lives or livelihoods, this acclaimed film uncovers a corrupt system that puts profits before patients. As official case numbers explode and hundreds of thousands of people around the globe go undiagnosed or misdiagnosed, the film is as relevant and timely as ever.

The newly released Director’s Cut includes 15-minutes of restored footage, re-edited scenes and character updates.

The New Perspectives Documentary series is programmed and moderated by filmmaker, Megan Smith-Harris. A Q&A will follow the film.

Celebrate Wilton Library’s 120th Year at Annual Meeting Sunday, June 14

Wilton Library began its 120th year of existence this spring and the celebration will continue all year long, starting with the Annual Meeting set for Sunday, June 14, from 4-5:30 p.m.. The business portion of the meeting will cover the election of officers and new trustees, the acknowledgement of retiring board members, and the presentation of awards to outstanding Volunteer of the Year and Staff Member of the Year. Following the meeting, Maureen Sullivan, former president of the American Library Association, will be the guest speaker.

This year’s nominated slate of officers includes returning members Ann Duffy, president, Ileanna Barns-Slavin, secretary and Robert Kelso, treasurer. Diane Wilson, a current trustee, is being nominated for vice president, replacing Glenn Hemmerle who is retiring from the board. Retiring board members are honored with books that will be placed in the collection with a nameplate acknowledging their service to the library.

After the business portion of the meeting, Ms. Sullivan, a prominent leader and educator in the library profession, will speak about the role of libraries and their importance to the communities they support. Her talk is entitled “The Library’s Role in Ensuring a Thriving Community for All.”

A short reception follows Ms. Sullivan’s talk. The annual meeting and reception are open to the public. Registration is encouraged, and can be done online or by calling 203.762.3950, ext. 239.

Wilton Library’s Ladies Luncheon Fundraiser, with Guest Elissa Grodin, Set for June 18

The ladies of Wilton will have a chance to chat with friends and neighbors and enjoy a celebrity author during the Ladies Luncheon at Wilton Library, Thursday, June 18, from noon-2:30 p.m.. The fundraiser features guest speaker Elissa Grodin, author of Death by Hitchcock, her latest novel. Grodin will discuss her book, her writing inspirations, and her current writing project which is a third mystery on the topic of narcissism.

Marly’s Bar & Bistro is catering the event, which is sponsored by Bankwell in Wilton. Guests will have a chance to participate in a drawing with prizes that include two JetBlue tickets, an Hermès scarf, a beauty basket featuring Chanel products and an enticing massage from Adam Broderick.

According to Robin Axness, the library’s director of development, “We wanted to have a special luncheon just for ladies and we also wanted Elissa to return to the library. We’re delighted we were able to combine the two in the spring before everyone starts heading off for summer vacation; everything fell into place so we leapt at the chance.” The event co-chairs are trustees Priscilla Thors and Saras Nair, M.D.

“We were thrilled when we heard Elissa was going to be our guest speaker. She and her husband Charles have been so supportive of the library,” Thors noted. The Grodin Family Fine Writers Award which is presented to authors chosen for Wilton Reads is sponsored by the Grodins.
