After a very fickle winter presenting days of snow and ice immediately followed by days in the 60s in some instances, Wilton Garden Club members agree: Enough is enough. Now is the time to get our hands back in the soil, connect with nature, and prepare for the best summer garden ever.
Rain or shine, the public is invited to the WGC’s 82nd Mother’s Day Weekend Plant Sale on Friday, May 6, and Saturday, May 7, to purchase the plants they need to rejuvenate and grow their gardens.
“We look forward to getting together with one another and the community at the sale after a long winter. Now is the time to get in our gardens, do some planting, and enjoy spring,” said plant sale co-chair Jennifer Davatzes.
This sale is one of the largest and most comprehensive plant sales in the Wilton area and the demand last year was record-setting. For 2022, the Club will hold a pre-sale event on Wednesday, May 4 at the Comstock Community Center Greenhouse (180 School Rd.) for those who want to get the first choice on many of the smaller gift selection offerings like hanging baskets, creatively designed floral baskets, and an assortment of herbs and vegetable plants.
Plans have been underway all year to ensure attendees find the plants they need for their gardens. For several weeks, WGC members have been digging plants from their own gardens to make sure a good selection of healthy, Wilton-grown specimens are available on sale days.
Offerings will include a large selection of perennials, annuals, vegetable seedlings, herbs, hanging baskets, wildflowers, flowering shrubs, patio containers, and floral gift baskets. There will be an increase in the number of native and pollinator plants on hand and, once again, many popular, award-winning dahlia tubers will be available. By popular demand, this year shoppers will find indoor houseplants which make great gifts.
Adding new plants and shrubs to the garden; creating a pollinator, butterfly, vegetable, or herb garden; or choosing a gift for Mom — they are all good reasons to come to the plant sale this year. Credit cards are accepted, and Garden Club members will be happy to offer assistance and answer questions.
Shoppers at the plant sale can feel good knowing that a large percentage of profits from the sale support many local organizations: the Norwalk River Valley Trail, Norwalk River Watershed Association, Wilton Land Conservation Trust, Wilton Library, Wilton Historical Society, and the Save the Sound Merwin Meadows Dana Dam Project have benefited. Town beautification projects like planting daffodils, the summer lamppost hanging baskets and winter snowflakes, and the town’s seven gardens maintained by the Garden Club are on this list as well.
For many, gardening reduces stress and can be cathartic, and yes, it is sometimes experimental. One thing is for sure: when you see your property and town bursting with colorful blooms and lush foliage in the summer, it’s sure to make you smile.
