No one showed more heart, fight and passion on the court at last night’s FCIAC finals than the Wilton High School varsity boys basketball team. Bringing the game into double overtime, Wilton faced Ridgefield with incredible determination and teamwork, but fell prey to injuries before and during the game that knocked out key players and saw a final score of 64-68 in favor of the Tigers.
One of the major factors that helped the boys continue to fight as hard as they did was the incredible crowd of fans that packed Alumni Hall at Fairfield University–a last-minute location where the game was moved with the expectation that so many fans would show. In fact, the doors were closed before tip-off as the arena filled to capacity, leaving some fans unable to watch from inside.
The once-in-a-lifetime matchup was an incredible game to experience:  deafening cheers, self-sacrificing athleticism from the Wilton ballers, and suspenseful action on the court. Frustration with a scoreboard that failed multiple times, delaying the game and breaking momentum was another obstacle adding to the drama of the matchup.
Coach Joel Geriak and his coaching team have built a program that has inspired a school and a town, and the boys showed that what they’ve been able to accomplish all season long lives up to the team’s motto–Heart Over Hype.
