The Wilton High School Ski Team celebrated a solid first race of the Connecticut Interscholastic Ski League (CISL) with its girls finishing first and its boys taking second in Class S last Thursday, Feb. 11 at Mount Southington. Additional opponents were Lauralton Hall, New Canaan, and Weston.
Wilton girls impressively finished 28 seconds ahead of their competition with a team score of 307.88, followed by Weston (335.88), Lauralton Hall (348.28), and New Canaan (350.28).
Six Warrior girls finished in the top 10 out of 63 skiers. Senior co-captain Kira Howard took 2nd with a combined two-run time of 49.23, followed by team newcomers sophomore Isabella Furman in 3rd and freshman Karolina Bukowski in 4th. Senior co-captain Alexandra Magnussen placed 5th, junior co-captain Sophia Polito claimed 7th, and sophomore Sloane Sullivan took 9th.
“Having two new skiers in our top three spots as well as having our returning skiers back in form bodes well for our Warriors this season,” said Bill Howard, Wilton’s girls coach. “We had a late start with very limited practice time due to COVID-19 but we are now in full race mode and looking forward to our next competition.”
Wilton boys, Class S State Champions for the last three years, achieved a team score of 293.76, just one second behind Weston. Four Wilton skiers finished in the top 10 out of 56 skiers: Senior co-captain Christian Theoharides claimed 1st place (45.51), senior co-captain Ryan van Heyst took 4th (46.97), junior co-captain Ryan Leung finished 9th, and senior Kiel Polito took 10th. Two Warrior freshmen also finished strong: Daniel Zoubarev in 11th (50.25) and Owen Theoharides in 15th (50.73).
“I’m very proud of our boys’ strong start, especially with only one mountain practice beforehand. I have no doubt that our three-time Class S state champs will achieve another great season of skiing,” Michael Kaulins, the Wilton boys coach, said.
