WHS Launches Boys Volleyball Team for Spring 2024, Tryouts in March

Boys volleyball is the fastest-growing high school sport in the country, and now Wilton High School will join other area schools to offer this dynamic team sport. The effort is being supported by WHS Athletic Director Bobby Rushton and WHS Head Volleyball Coach Steve Brienza, along with the newly formed parent-led Wilton Boys Volleyball Club.
Freshman to senior boys of all skill levels are encouraged to try out on Saturday, March 16 and Sunday, March 17. More information will be provided at the WHS Spring Sports Night on Thursday, March 14 from 6-7 p.m. and updates will be shared on the sportsYou app (to join use code EJGS-E79F).
Interested boys should register on Final Forms before tryouts begin. Email questions to Coach Brienzas or the Wilton Boys Volleyball Club.
WHS Cheer Crowned Champions
On Saturday, Feb. 24, Wilton Youth Cheerleading and the WHS varsity cheerleading team traveled to Tolland, CT for the annual New England Cheerleading Association (NECA) Open Championship, and each team placed in the top three of their respective divisions.
Junior Warriors Team White placed third in the Youth/Rec Novice Division; Junior Warriors Team Blue placed second in the Middle School Intermediate Division; and WHS varsity placed first in the High School Varsity Intermediate Division.
For the first time in program history, Wilton Youth Cheerleading has two competitive teams due to the growing interest in the program. They are coached by WHS cheer alumnae Maddi Turner, Kelli Tait, Sam Tait, and Teagan Tait, as well as Wilton Youth Cheer Program Director Marielle Wohlberg, and current WHS cheerleaders Isa Coto and Cameron Russnok. Team White comprises 20 cheerleaders in grades 3-8 and Team Blue comprises 16 cheerleaders in grades 4-8. These teams practice twice a week and work on strength training, tumbling, stunts, dance, and cheer.
Turner and Wohlberg coach Wilton High School Varsity. The team is made up of 13 cheerleaders, including senior captain Elise Hardy, junior captain Russnok, and junior captain Summer Gardner.
In addition to the team’s performance, junior Anna Reiter, Hardy, and Gardner competed individually in “Top Gun” Jumper and Tumbling divisions. Reiter received a third place medal for her tumbling skills.
All three teams will be concluding their seasons this week. The Junior Warrior teams will be competing at Oxford High School’s Middle School Mania Competition on Friday, March 1, and the WHS varsity squad will be competing at the CIAC State Championship on Saturday, March 2.
