Why it’s Important: The Board of Education is a six-member governing body overseeing the Wilton Public Schools and acts as a bridge between the schools and the community. The board sets policies and is statutorily responsible for overall governance of the school district. In addition, the board hires and evaluates the superintendent, who manages day-to-day operations. Board members serve four-year terms.
Who’s on the Board: In 2023, Chair Ruth DeLuca (D) was elected to her second term and Patrick Pearson (D) and Lori Bufano(R) were elected to the BOE for their first terms. Heather Priest (U/Republican Endorsed) was elected that same year to fill two years of a former member’s four-year term; she declined to run for re-election this year.
What’s at Stake: While the Board of Education is the board that oversees the town entity responsible for two-thirds of Wilton’s annual town budget and is the primary driver of home values in the town, the stakes are relatively low for the election with an uncontested race — three open seats and only three candidates running.
That means everyone running will be seated on the board for the next four years.
We still interviewed all BOE candidates, so that residents would have the same chance to know as much about their approaches and philosophies as possible to stay informed.
One good thing we’ve heard is that the candidates are already talking about looking forward to collaborating and working together.
