To Vote by Absentee Ballot in Connecticut

Absentee ballots are available for any election, primary or referendum. Registered voters must complete an application to receive the ballot and submit the application to the town clerk of the town where the voter resides.

Who may vote by absentee ballot?

Registered voters who:

  • are ill or physically disabled
  • serving in the military
  • will be out of town on Election Day
  • serve as poll workers in polling places other than their own
  • whose religion forbids secular activity on election day.

How do I apply to vote by absentee ballot?

You can obtain an application from any town clerk’s office. Complete the form and return it to the town clerk’s office. After the completed application is received, the absentee ballot will be sent to you at the address specified on the application. Absentee ballots are sent out four weeks before an election. In order for your vote to count, the completed absentee ballot must be received in the town clerk’s office by Election Day.

After the ballots become available, you may also appear at the town clerk’s office in person, show identification, complete the application, and cast your ballot.

Can I download an application online?

Yes, if you visit the CT Secretary of the State’s website, you can download an application, print it out, sign it, and send it to the town clerk in the town where you reside. You can also download it from the Town of Wilton website.

Your ballot will be sent to the address specified on the application in the appropriate space. Additional information about the absentee voting process is available at the Secretary of the State’s website or by calling 860.509.6100.
