Wilton is under a National Weather Service heat advisory today, Thursday, June 11 through Friday, June 12 at 8 p.m. Today’s temperatures could reach a high near 92 degrees, and heat index values up to 100 are possible.
The heat index is what the temperature feels like when the relative humidity is combined with the air temperature. Officials warn that there is an increased risk of heat-related illness for vulnerable populations with the expected weather.
Three cooling centers are open in Wilton on Thursday and Friday. Residents who need a safe, air-conditioned space can locate the nearest center by calling 2-1-1 or availing themselves of the options in Wilton:
- Comstock Community Center (180 School Rd.) Thursday-Friday, 8:30 a.m.-8 p.m.
- Wilton YMCA (404 Danbury Rd.) Thursday-Friday 10 a.m.-8 p.m.
- Wilton Library (137 Ridgefield Rd.) Thursday 10 a.m.-8 p.m., and Friday 10 a.m.-6 p.m.
Wilton Emergency Management officials encourage residents to take several precautionary steps to prevent heat-related illnesses, injuries and death during hot weather:
- Stay in an air-conditioned indoor location as much as you can
- Never leave children or pets in cars
- Drink plenty of fluids even if you don’t feel thirsty.
- Schedule outdoor activities carefully
- Wear loose, lightweight, light-colored clothing and sunscreen
- Pace yourself
- Check on a friend or neighbor, in particular the elderly and the functional needs community
- Check the local news for health and safety updates
- To reduce risk during outdoor work, OSHA recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments.
- Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency — in cases of heat stroke call 911
