Some of Fairfield County’s best young jazz musicians will participate in the 42nd annual Wilton High School Jazz Symposium on Friday, Feb. 23. This event will take place in Wilton High School’s Little Theater and is open to the public. It is a free event, but donations to support Wilton High School music programs are appreciated.

The first session starts at 3:30 p.m. and ends at 6 p.m.. The second session starts at 6:45 p.m.. Audience members can arrive at any point during the afternoon and evening to enjoy the performances.

In addition to performances by WHS Jazz Bands I and II, there will be performances from several other area high school jazz bands, including Weston, Norwalk, Fairfield Warde, Westhill, Stamford and Brien McMahon.

“Our region is ripe with quality jazz music and jazz education,” says Nicholas Loafman, WHS band director. “We are honored to host so many outstanding student bands from the local area. We are looking forward to an evening of great performances.  All members of the community are welcome to come enjoy with us!”

In total, approximately 100 gifted young jazz musicians are expected to assemble for the event to entertain and share their talents. Musical selections will range in style from traditional big band swing to Latin to ballads to contemporary jazz.

This event also will feature a special guest performance at 8:45 p.m. by the Berkshire Jazz Orchestra. This regional jazz group—comprised of active performers and educators from all over Fairfield County—has been playing selections from the great jazz bands such as Buddy Rich, Woody Herman, Glenn Miller and Tommy Dorsey since 1987.
