Wilton High School’s ski team enjoyed a solid start to the CISL (Connecticut Interscholastic Ski League) season at its first race on Jan. 9 at Mount Southington.

With Class S match-ups against Barlow, Guilford, Southington and Weston, Wilton girls achieved a 2-2 record (third place) with a team score of 316.08, three seconds behind Southington (313.08) and five behind rival Weston (311.05).

Wilton sophomore Kira Howard (pictured above) was the race’s overall winner (for Class S and Class L teams) with 46.92. Also scoring for Wilton were senior co-captain Emily O’Brien (51.74); freshman Sophia Polito (52.39); senior co-captain Hope Ullman (54.6); sophomore Alexandra Magnusson (55.16) and senior co-captain Emily Welch (55.27).

Facing the same opposing teams, Wilton boys achieved a 3-1 record (second place) with a team score of 302.07. Southington took first with 297.92. Wilton sophomore Ryan van Heyst (pictured below at the start) placed third individually with 48.3, and senior co-captain August Theoharides claimed seventh with 49.4.

Also scoring for Wilton boys were junior Dominick Polito (50.28); seniors Philip Klinga (50.72) and Scott Verrilli (51.12); and junior Ben Leung (52.25).

Wilton’s next race is Wednesday, Jan. 16, against Cheshire Academy, Danbury/Bethel, Hand (Madison) and Wamogo (Litchfield) at Mount Southington.
