Wilton High School‘s ski team commanded presence in its third race this season on Thursday, Jan. 25 at Mount Southington.
The Warrior boys remain undefeated for the season, achieving wins over Staples, Farmington, Gilbert and Pomperaug. The team is now 7-0 in Class S of the Connecticut Interscholastic Ski League (CISL).
Coach Mike Kaulins was pleased with his team’s success. “Despite a challenging course and rapidly changing conditions we were able to defeat each team we went head to head with. Looking forward, we expect to continue our work on timing our turns and ensuring that we’re exploding out of the starting gate.”
Out of 103 skiers, Wilton boys were led by freshman Ryan van Heyst (11th place), freshman Christian Theoharides (14th), and junior co-captain August Theoharides (15th).
Wilton girls won first place in Class S by defeating Pomperaug and Lauralton and are now 3-2 for the season. Scoring in the varsity race of 101 skiers were freshman Kira Howard (5th overall), senior Julia Bonnist (17th), junior Emily O’Brien (28th), junior Hope Ullman (30th), senior Katie Reid (34th), and freshman Alexandra Magnusson (38th).
“Despite the recent rainy weather causing us to miss a couple of practices, the girls skied well and several team members continue to move up their results in the league ranks,” said girls’ coach Bill Howard.
This week several Wilton ski team members will race for a spot to represent Team Connecticut against other state teams at the Eastern Region High School championships held in New Hampshire in March.
