The Human Library is coming back to Wilton Library on Saturday, March 28, 2026, and with its return comes the need for volunteer “Human Books.”
The Human Library is a community event featuring a library of people — human “Books” — and their experiences with prejudice. The “Books” have directly or indirectly been exposed to prejudice, bias or discrimination based on aspects of their person, heritage or life experiences. At the Human Library, “Readers” — members of the community who want to foster understanding — are able to check out a “Book” for a personal and honest conversation in a safe space. The “Books” have an opportunity to share their personal experiences, and “Readers” are encouraged to ask questions. This format is designed to build a positive framework for dialogue that can challenge stereotypes and prejudices through one-on-one conversations.
Wilton Library is looking for people to volunteer as human “Books” for the four-hour Human Library event on next March. Anyone who feels that they fit the criteria for a “Book” and is comfortable speaking with others about the challenges they have faced can fill out the online application by Nov. 8, 2025. The Human Library is an international movement that started in Denmark in 2000 and is now held in more than 80 countries around the world. In 2018, Wilton Library became the first non-academic library in Connecticut to receive permission from the Human Library Organization to host the event.
