Just as news breaks of another sexting incident for the scandal-plagued former NY congressman Anthony Weiner, Wilton Library has announced a screening of the documentary, Weiner, as part of its New Perspectives Film Series. The film will be shown Saturday, Sept. 10, 7:30–9:30 p.m..
One of the most talked about films at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival, Weiner, (directed by Josh Kriegman and Elyse Sternberg) follows the rising star congressman at his peak, a natural for higher office. His high-profile marriage to celebrated Hillary Clinton aide-de-camp Huma Abedin only burnishes his image. The filmmakers also happen to be aboard as Weiner’s image crashes loudly with the infamous sexual selfies that ruined his profile. The directors trail Weiner through his recovery attempt, only to have his hopes dashed again a second time by his conduct.
It’s a fascinating portrait of tenacity—or is it delusion—as Kriegman himself even asks the beleaguered Weiner why is he still granting the directors access as his self-destructive behavior continues to detonate in ways that redefine self-immolation. With Weiner in the headlines again now in summer 2016, this is a as fascinating a portrayal as ever.
