Tag sale sites are all the rage. You can go on Facebook and find pages where Wilton residents are reselling, buying, repurposing and off-loading their ‘stuff.’ Popular in many towns, the pages seem to have post after post pop up almost every minute with deals to be made.
But especially meaningful at this time of year, another route is to donate some of those objects that might still have resale value but the value of making someone else happy is much higher. That’s something several members of the Wilton Moms’ Club opted to do rather than post their items on tag sale, especially some of the toys.
“A number of the club members were discussing that we have toys that are in good condition but our children have outgrown. Who better to get these toys than our local Malta House Homeless Shelter, which gladly said they’d accept them for their families.” explains WMC member Alexis Murphy. “While we could sell our goods on local tag sale sites, donating them to those less fortunate will positively impact our community, save us the time and hassle of selling them, and it also feels good!”
The organization was a good fit. “The Malta house relies on donations and aid from the community, to provide shelter and support for vulnerable families. Without our help, they could not positively impact the lives of so many of our neighbors,” says WMC member Brittany Leitten.
As moms, it also gave the women the opportunity to teach their children about helping others, says Tobin Bassani, another WMC mom. “It’s the season of giving and it would be great experience for my children to pick a few toys that we’ve loved but grown out of and give them to others so that they would have a chance to love and use them too.”
But rather than collect just from its own members, the club has decided to create a toy drive and open it up to a wider group—everyone. Members will be collecting used toys in good condition and puzzles with all the pieces from now through Saturday, Dec. 12 (no stuffed animals, please). The drop-off point is a club member’s home in central Wilton. To learn more and to find out where to donate, send an email to Brittany Leitten.
