Today, the Wilton Police Department posted an announcement on its Facebook page that officers are currently out on Wilton roads for a Click It or Ticket Seat Belt Enforcement effort. Their intention is to promote safe driving and increase the protection of all motorists.
The officers will be out on Wilton roads enforcing the State Occupant Protection Laws and issuing citations to those who are unbuckled. The post includes the tagline, “In real life you don’t get a second chance.”
Similar to previous enforcement efforts that the department has announced in advance, the publicity of the Click It or Ticket campaign is meant to prevent rather than catch someone in the act. This may surprise some pessimists who criticize such advance warnings because it will likely decrease the number of people Wilton Police can catch. The deterrence effect is much more important than amassing fines, say police officials.
“The campaign isn’t just about enforcement and giving out tickets; it’s about educating the public too and letting it be known that we are out here and …we will take enforcement,” Sgt. Rob Cipolla once told GMW during a distracted driving checkpoint effort.
