Wilton’s typically clean-shaven police officers may look a little different for the next few months. That’s because some of them are taking part in “Movember,” an international effort to raise awareness of men’s health issues, including depression in men, prostate cancer and other male cancers. Movember participants hold off from shaving from November through January.

This is the second year that Wilton officers are participating. In order to be a part of the fundraiser, the officers needed to get approval from the Wilton Police Commission and Chief Robert Crosby to stop shaving, as facial hair is restricted for those serving on the Wilton force. Officers were granted permission if they pledged to donate $50 per month that they didn’t shave.

The officers will donate the funds to the Wilton Police Benevolent Association (PBA), which in turn will make a donation to the charity voted on by the PBA member officers.

This year, the members decided to donate 50-percent of the funds raised to St. Vincent’s SWIM Across the Sound, a charitable, grass-roots organization run by St. Vincent’s Medical Center Foundation. SWIM has a unique niche, providing cancer education, screening and prevention programs at low- or no-cost for the underinsured and uninsured. SWIM also helps individual cancer patients on a case-by-case basis with specific needs, such as funding wigs and prostheses, medication assistance, free transportation to treatments and appointments, day-care scholarships and support groups.

The other half of the total funds Wilton officers raise will be donated to a Wilton town employee whose child has a physical disability. The funds will be used to purchase a new handicap accessible van.

Sgt. David Hartman, president of the Wilton PBA is thrilled that the PBA can help. “One of the goals of the PBA is to assist those in need and this fundraiser is one more way to accomplish this goal.

Those wishing to support the effort and donate can do so online via a Go Fund Me account or by mailing a check directly to the Wilton PBA at 240 Danbury Rd., Wilton, CT 06897.
