On Tuesday, May 6, the Wilton Police Department officially welcomed Ofc. Kyle Klein to its ranks.
First Selectman Toni Boucher offered poignant comments for the occasion, noting that a police officer’s job is more challenging than ever.
“In moments of danger, whenever we need protection or rescue, we count on our cop,” Boucher said. “Officers face the reality of a routine house call or traffic stop turning deadly at any time, you confront repeat offenders, the possibility of a school shooting or hostage taking, an increase in violence against first responders, a lack of compliance and respect from community members, and overwhelming workloads. Add the increased and constant scrutiny, and it becomes evident just how challenging the situation has become.”
“Kyle, you have stepped up to the challenge of this very demanding job,” Boucher continued. “Know that Wilton respects the work that you and our police officers do on our front lines of safety and security.”
Klein served for two years as a police officer in the Athens-Clarke County Police Department in Georgia, but he also had ties to Connecticut. He grew up in Bethel and earned an associate’s degree in law enforcement from Naugatuck Community College.
According to a Wilton Police Department press release, Klein was described as a highly motivated officer, eager to learn and take initiative, particularly when it comes to engagement with the public and his commitment to community-oriented policing.
In an email exchange with GMW, Police Information Officer Lt. Anna Tornello noted that Klein’s appointment underscored the department’s continual effort to build “a proactive, community-focused police force.”
“Community policing is what we do every day — engaging in positive interactions with the public and seeking partnership with the community to accomplish the goals as listed in our mission statement,” Tornello wrote.
“Our mission is to serve and to protect all citizens, and to maintain peace and preserve the quality of life within the Town of Wilton by upholding the highest standards of integrity, fairness and vigilance. We are committed to defending civil rights, honoring the value and dignity of every person, and ensuring the equitable and just application of the law. We strive to build upon our professionalism by valuing teamwork, encouraging innovation, accepting accountability, and seeking knowledge and growth.“
“We are proud to select officers who embody our mission and show a commitment to engaging with the public, work closely with our residents and create a safer community,” Tornello continued.
At Klein’s swearing-in ceremony, Wilton Police Chief Tom Conlan commented on the visible show of support from Klein’s family members who were in attendance.
“We are delighted to see such a strong family presence here today,” said Conlan as he welcomed Klein to the Wilton Police “family”.
Town Clerk Lori Kaback administered the oath of office as Klein received his official Wilton police badge, #88.
